🏇 Southwell Racing Tips Today – Handicap Preview & Each-Way Selection | 24th October
Our Southwell racing tips take centre stage this evening as we stick with the all-weather for the winter months, with a competitive card and a few familiar names worth keeping an eye on.
Our attention today is on a couple of races either end of the meeting, where I've spent some time digging through the form, previous winning marks, course records and the likely pace of the race.
And as always, it's about finding something at the right price rather than simply siding with the obvious favourites.
With both having FOUR paying places, we're hoping for decent each-way runs for our money.
BOL if you're making any selections today🍀🤞

ALAMTY STAR – 10/1 EACH WAY – HALF STAKE (FOUR paying places) 🍀
A five-furlong handicap at Southwell this afternoon, with Rhythm N Hooves attracting plenty of market support and Moulin Boo another obvious danger following his course-and-distance victory last month.
Both have solid claims, but at the prices I'm going to take an each-way chance on Robert Cowell's ALMATY STAR.
He's a horse who regularly runs well without necessarily getting his head in front, but there's plenty to like about his chances of making the frame again today. LTO at Leicester he finished 2nd of eleven from OR78, beaten just over a length in a similar Class 4 handicap. That was his first appearance following a 73-day break, so hopefully the outing will have brought him forward.
His record at Southwell is particularly interesting. He's raced here three times over today's trip, finishing 2nd, 3rd and 4th, including a third of thirteen in stronger Class 3 company from OR87.
He's now down to OR78, some 9lb below that particular performance and 5lb below his last all-weather winning mark of 83.
There are also a couple of interesting form lines involving today's opposition. He finished just a quarter of a length behind Rhythm N Hooves here in January last year, when both raced from OR82. He's now 4lb better off in the handicap.
More recently, he was second to Moulin Boo at Wolverhampton in March, beaten around a length. The respective handicap marks have since shifted 7lb in Almaty Star's favour.
Rab Havlin takes the ride from Trap 9, and I'm hoping he can get him into a handy position without becoming involved in an early battle. Rhythm N Hooves and She's Got A Brother both like to get on with things, so there could be plenty of early pace.
The obvious reservation is that our selected finds winning difficult, despite regularly running his race. Nonetheless, he's been placed in 14 of his 17 qualifying runs on Standard, and has already shown he can compete against better opposition from considerably higher marks.
At 10/1 with FOUR paying places, I'm happy to take the each-way chance that Rab Havlin can get him tucked in behind the pace and produce him at the right time.
Let's hope the Star shines at Southwell! 🐎🍀

DUE DATE – 11/1 EACH WAY – HALF STAKE (FOUR paying places) 🍀
A competitive little 6f handicap to finish the evening at Southwell, with Mount Ruapehu an obvious danger having won all three of his previous visits here. Age Of Time and the well-backed Mehmar are also attracting plenty of interest, but at the prices I'm happy to look a little further down the betting.
We're going to side with Charlie Wallis' DUE DATE.
He's a previous course-and-distance winner who is starting to look dangerously well handicapped again.
He enjoyed a good spell around this time last year, winning at Chelmsford in September from OR55 before following up over 5f in October from OR62. That latter victory came against opposition averaging 6lb or so higher level than today's average mark of 54.
There have been a few below-par efforts since, but his latest 3rd of twelve at Wolves was encouraging. Beaten just over two lengths from OR55 in a stronger race than today's, it suggests he's on the way back..
He's done his best winning when leading or racing prominently, and there aren't too many confirmed front-runners in opposition.
Uncle Sam could go forward from stall 1, while Edmond Halley is another capable of racing handily. Nonetheless, I'm hoping Rob Hornby can bounce Due Date out from Trap 11 and get him into a decent position early.
As yesterday's result, the wide draw isn't necessarily a negative either. My old tracker notes go back to his Chelmsford victory in January 2025, when he won comfortably despite being drawn widest of all in stall 12.
He hasn't won for a year, which is the obvious reservation, but he's back on a very workable mark, has proven form around here and could get a race run to suit.
At 11/1 with FOUR paying places, I'm happy to take an each-way chance that Hornby can get him rolling again.
Let's hope he's due another winning date! 🐎🍀
