🏇 Southwell Racing Tips Today – Handicap Preview & Each-Way Selection | 22nd October

3 min read

🍀 Today we're heading to Southwell for the 4.26pm Midnite A Next Generation Betting App Apprentice Handicap, a competitive Class 6 sprint over five furlongs on the Tapeta.

There are several recent course-and-distance winners towards the head of the market, although a few have been hit with hefty rises in the weights, which could make life a little tougher this afternoon.

It's not the strongest-looking contest, and with FOUR paying places available, we're looking beyond the obvious favourites for something at a bigger price that might just outrun its odds. Again, we'll keep the stakes sensible today with a half-stake each-way selection, before we ramp up from neext week.

Let's see if we can keep the good run going!

BOL if you're making any selections today🍀🤞🐎

Back in the morning before 9.00 am.

CRYPTO QUEST – 22/1 EACH WAY – HALF STAKE (FOUR paying places) 🍀

It's a fairly ordinary-looking Class 6 five-furlong handicap at Southwell this afternoon, where Popular Dream heads the market following his recent course-and-distance success. One For Harvey and Mimime are also towards the top of the betting after winning here recently, although both have been handed fairly hefty rises by the handicapper.

We're going to take a chance on something at a much bigger price, with Scott Doxon's CRYPTO QUEST making some each-way appeal at around 22/1.

The seven-year-old has been difficult to catch right in recent times, but there was plenty to like about his run here earlier this month when finishing second of eleven behind today's favourite, Popular Dream. That was his first really encouraging performance for some time, and he returns to the same course and distance from an unchanged mark of OR53.

He followed that with a disappointing last-place finish at Newcastle, but there's a perfectly reasonable excuse for that effort. He jumped awkwardly leaving the stalls, with his jockey nearly coming out of the saddle, effectively putting paid to his chances before the race had properly developed. We're happy enough to forgive that run.

Interestingly, he's previously finished second and third over this Southwell five furlongs from OR60, some 7lb higher than today's rating, so there's evidence that he's capable of getting involved from his current mark.

Scott Dixon knows this track particularly well and has three runners in the race. Ryan Kavanagh takes the ride, and although his recent figures haven't been particularly inspiring, his longer-term Southwell record of 75 rides, 11 winners and 24 places is certainly respectable.

There's also the possibility that the market leaders won't find life quite so easy following their recent handicap rises. With several runners capable of racing forward, we're hoping they go a decent gallop and give ours something to aim at.

The obvious reservation is his inconsistent form, and he's not one to be getting carried away with. However, in a race lacking much strength in depth, his recent course-and-distance second suggests he could easily make the frame again if getting away on terms.

At 22/1 with FOUR paying places, we're prepared to have a smaller interest and see whether he can outrun those odds.🍀
