Pontefract Racing Tips

Ponty17.03

ALPHA CAPTURE – 8/1 EW, FIVE places

There are some very solid horses towards the head of the market here. Fiscal Policy has an excellent Pontefract record and arrives on the back of another C&D win, while Woodstock brings arguably the strongest piece of recent class form after finishing third of 18 from OR81 in an AvOR85.1 race.

Rare Change is also dangerously well treated on his old C&D form, and Mister Sox has plenty going for him from a reduced mark. But with five places available, we’re going to take a chance on another horse who has already shown he handles Pontefract particularly well.

Opting for Roger Fell trainen ALPHA CAPTURE.

He had two very good runs here before, including a runner-up effort over this 6f trip, and he returns from a mark of 83, only 1lb higher than when finishing a clear second at Beverley two starts ago.

That Beverley run was better than the bare result suggests too. He was slowly away and found himself towards the rear, far from ideal given the historical disadvantage for hold-up horses there, yet still made sustained headway and ran right through the line behind Glenfinnan.

That performance was enough for us to put him in the tracker and confirmed that a mark in the low 80s remains perfectly workable.

He disappointed at York last time, but that came in an apprentices’ race and we’re prepared to forgive one poor effort while the drop back to 6f shouldn’t be a problem given his previous Pontefract form.

His patient racing style is also worth noting. From stall 13 he is drawn high, but higher-drawn horses have fared better when ridden patiently rather than being forced forward.

That should him much better than trying to use up petrol early and tyhe booking of Danny Tudhope is a definite positive.

Has shortened a tad from 11's overnight on around 8/1 with FIVE places there is still enough juice in the price for us.
