Kempton 19.15
FORT AUGUSTUS - 33/1 EACH WAY – 4 PLACES, 1/5 odds 🔥
There are a few obvious ones towards the head of the market. Twitch has the ideal low draw in stall 2, arrives here off a win and should be able to get into a handy position from the outset, while Ararat has been well supported and gets stall 1 after racing from the outside on his latest Kempton visit.
Portman Blue was another I seriously considered; the market certainly seems to have found him and there is an interesting old Kempton line through Comic Hero, who beat him here in February and has since progressed to a mark of 82.
The pace and draw data suggest we should be looking towards the lower half of the stalls and horses capable of holding a reasonable early position, with Kempton's 7f historically much kinder to those racing prominently than those dropped right out at the back.
Based on that will take Charlie Wallis' FORT AUGUSTUS.
He should have enough tactical flexibility to race midfield or a little closer if Jason Watson wants to use the draw.
There is also much more substance to his profile than a 33/1 quote suggests. He is a dual 7f all-weather winner this season, winning at Southwell in April from OR53 and again in May from OR55. He races here from OR57, so he isn't being asked to suddenly rediscover form from some long-forgotten mark.
His latest Kempton run can also be forgiven to a degree. That came over 6f after 102 days off, whereas virtually all his strongest recent form has come over 7f. This is only his second start back from the break and he now returns to the trip at which he has done his winning.
His Polytrack record isn't as strong as his Tapeta record, which is the obvious reservation, and we certainly aren't pretending he is bombproof. But he has run respectably on Polytrack before, including a fourth at Chelmsford from OR56 against stronger average opposition than he faces here.
Another big plus is Jason Watson who was aboard when winning over 7f at Southwell in May and today on with 33/1 and the FOUR paying places.
