The final day of the Ebor Festival dominates proceedings on the Knavesmire, beginning with the Group 3 Strensall Stakes, followed by the Group 1 City of York Stakes at 15:00, before the famous Ebor Handicap at 15:35 brings together a huge field of older stayers over 1m6f.

York also stages two particularly competitive Heritage Handicaps, including the 20-runner Constantine Handicap over 6f at 16:10, with one selection going in that one.

Today's Horse Racing Tips

Newmarket 14.09

PHOTOSYNTHESIS 10/1 EW, 4 places

This is a competitive 6f Class 4 in which the market is understandably concentrating on the progressive Pilu, while Sword, Spring Bloom and Archduke Ferdinand all bring credible claims.

Pilu is probably the most obvious choice. He has been competing creditably in much stronger company and his low draw/prominent profile is particularly attractive, but the market has already reacted strongly and he is now too short.

At the prices, however, PHOTOSYNTHESIS looks the more attractive each-way proposition with a particularly solid combination of proven course form, handicap position and today’s likely race setup.

The five-year-old signed off last season by winning over 6f on Newmarket’s Rowley Mile from this exact OR84, and that victory came in a race slightly stronger than today’s.

There have also been encouraging signs this season. After needing his comeback, he ran respectably in stronger Class 3 company at Newbury before finishing just two lengths away at Ascot and then placed at Doncaster.

His latest Doncaster run was less impressive on paper, but there were excuses being impeded by Kats Bob at the start, and the overall recent turf evidence suggests he retains sufficient ability for a contest of this level.

Newmarket’s 6f configuration favours horses racing on or close to the speed, particularly from the lower numbers. Coming from trap 5 and should put him close to Pilu who should help ensure there is pace on the low side.

There is also pace towards the higher numbers through Zoulu Chief and Archduke Ferdinand, so this should be a genuinely run sprint rather than a muddling affair.

Other notables, Spring Bloom is thriving over this C&D but now meets a stronger field than those he has been beating, while Zoulu Chief is potentially dangerous at a much bigger price if able to dominate the high-side pace.

Peter Chapple-Hyam has two runners in the race, and this is certainly the one that makes greater appeal to us on the evidence, with the experienced Rab Havlin booked to do the steering and priced with 10/1, 4 PLACES (1/5 odds)

York 16.10

🏇 STRATUSNINE — 16/1 EW, 5 places

We’re returning to one of our trackers in the hugely competitive Constantine Handicap, with Hugo Palmer's STRATUSNINE.

We added him to the tracker after Wednesday’s run here, when he finished sixth of 21 over the extended 5f despite being drawn 16 on what appeared to be the less-favoured high side. He was still only beaten around four and a half lengths and fared best of those racing from the higher numbers.

The return to 6f is a definite positive. Stratusnine had been shaping well on several occasions before deservedly opening his account for the season in the Sky Bet Dash over this very course and distance in July, beating 20 rivals from OR95.

He then proved that was no fluke when stepped up into one of the strongest sprint handicaps of the season, finishing an excellent second of 27 in the Stewards’ Cup at Goodwood, beaten just a quarter of a length in a race rated 5lb above this one.

His conditions profile is also difficult to ignore. He has made the frame on 4 of 5 visits to York, 6 of 7 runs over 6f, 4 of 7 at Class 2 level and 3 of 5 in comparable big fields.

Obvious risk is that the rise through the handicap means he now races from OR104, 9lb above the mark from which he won over C&D, and this comes only three days after Wednesday’s effort.

From trap 13, not the more favourable low/middle berth I'd ideally want, however, he should have useful pace around him to provide a tow into the race, and his Stewards’ Cup performance suggests the higher mark is not beyond him.
