🏇 Saturday’s turf Flat action comes from Doncaster, Chester, Bath and Musselburgh, with the headline meeting at Doncaster for St Leger Day.

The 15:35 Betfred St Leger is the Group 1 feature, while our attention is firmly on the (14:20) Portland Handicap, a 22-runner Class 2 sprint that looks the standout betting race for us today.

That will be our sole focus, with two darts thrown. The age profile is much cleaner than the other handicaps around the country, with 19 of the 22 runners aged 4+, whereas several of the Chester, Bath and Musselburgh races are much more heavily populated by younger horses.

Ahead of the Ayr Festival next week, for which we may see a few go from here, this one gives us a deep field of exposed sprinters with several established names sitting in the potential value zone, including Toca Madera, Desert Falcon, I’m Next, Apollo One and Eternal Sunshine.🔥

Today's Horse Racing Tips

York 14.20

TOCA MADERA – 7/1 EACH WAY 6 places & ROSARIO - 12/1 EACH WAY 6 places

There are plenty in here with chances, so a double dart from me today in what is always one of the most competitive sprint handicaps of the season.

Firs up David O'Meara's TOCA MADERA. 

He is a previous C&D winner, having scored over this extended five furlongs at Doncaster in June, and he has done very little wrong since. His recent form has come in some of the hottest sprint handicaps around, including a fine effort in the Stewards’ Cup at Goodwood, where he did well despite meeting trouble in running, and then another strong performance when 3rd here over a very similar trip.

That consistency is backed up his current OR95 validated by recent turf performances from marks of 95 and 96, including a latest second from today’s exact mark, so there is no concern that the handicapper has him in the wrong place. He has repeatedly shown he can compete in strong, sprint handicaps and now returns to a track where he has already won.

Tactically, he also looks well positioned. Trap 11 puts him right in the centre of the track, close to plenty of pace, and his natural prominent/leading style should allow Daniel Tudhope to get him into a good rhythm without needing to overdo things early. That feels particularly important in a race where the pace is likely to be strong across several parts of the field.

The going holds no fears, the trip looks ideal, and Daniel Tudhope knows him extremely well, having been aboard for his Doncaster win, his York third and several other strong efforts this season.

Second up is Roger Teal trained ROSARIO.

Our second dart makes plenty of appeal returning to a race in which he ran a cracker twelve months ago.

He finished 3rd in last year’s race, beaten only around half a length, from OR91, and comes back this time from OR88. That is a significant positive in itself, but importantly he also arrives in form having won comfortably at Sandown last time on easier ground.

Last years race was arguably stronger than this and as a naturally a hold-up, and that style worked perfectly well when he finished third in this race last year. With plenty of the obvious pace sitting from the centre towards the higher numbers, his Trap 13 should give Rossa Ryan a good tow into the race rather than leave him isolated.

The easier ground clearly suited at Sandown and similar conditions should be fine again here.

Rossa Ryan keeps the ride after partnering him to that latest win, which is another positive, while Roger Teal’s yard has a good recent record in the Portland and will know exactly what sort of horse is required for this race.
