Ayr 14.30

JUNGLE DRUMS & UNCLE DON, Both around 14/1 EW, 6 places

Opting for a couple of stabs in this one, and first up is Jamie Osborne’s JUNGLE DRUMS.

His latest run is the key piece of evidence for us. He was only beaten around a length and a half when finishing 4th in a Class 2 over 6f on soft ground at Goodwood, racing from today’s OR89 in a race rated higher than this.

He was also a Listed winner as a 2yo for Karl Burke on soft ground, so there is plenty in the back form to suggest easier conditions are no problem.

He had been a little disappointing on turf since, despite a couple of AW wins, but that Goodwood run was much more like it and importantly he finished around a length in front of likely favourite Toyotomi that day. Toyotomi may have had excuses in running, but they race from the same marks again here and at the prices our selected is the better each-way value.

The double-figure draw looks workable, he is capable of racing prominently rather than being dependent on a hold-up ride, and that fits well with the pace profile we have seen at Ayr this week.

He also looks to come alive at this time of year, and with soft ground another positive, he makes plenty of appeal at the price.

Sam James does the steering and we'll take the 14/1 EW with SIX places. 🏇💷

Second up is Robert Cowells UNCLE DON.

He comes with a few more questions attached, having not won since 2024 and still searching for his first victory since joining Cowell from Richard Fahey, so he is certainly not the easiest horse to catch right. But there have been signs that he is coming back to himself.

His latest 5th of 16 at Windsor over 6f was a better effort and has already finished 2nd from OR86 in a race of similar strength, before that run.

He also has some previous with ease in the ground, including a decent placed effort at Newbury towards the end of last season, while it is worth remembering he was 2nd in Listed company here at Ayr as a 2yo, a run which helped earn him an opening mark in the high 90s.

He has obviously slipped a long way since then, but that old class is still worth noting now he is down to OR87.

The other interesting angle is how his run-style has changed since joining Cowell. His recent runs have been much more prominent, and from trap 25 that could be important.

If Marco Ghiani can use the high draw positively and get him travelling near the pace, he could find himself in one of the stronger positions as they come into the final furlong.

The softer ground is the main question, and he does need everything to fall right, but there is enough in the mark, the old Ayr form and the more positive recent tactics to make him interesting at a double-figure 14/1 EW with SIX places. 🏇💷🔥
