The spotlight falls on York today as the prestigious Dante Festival gets underway, one of the standout meetings of the early Flat season and a key stepping stone towards the summer’s biggest races.
Alongside the Group contests and Classic trials, there’s also a fiercely competitive sprint handicap scene to get stuck into, and today’s focus comes in the (15:55) Churchill Tyres Sprint Handicap, 6f Class 2 contest where early pace and track position are likely to prove crucial🫎
Disappointed with that run from Hover on The Wind yesterday. Looked well in it a the furlong marker with Barry McHugh haven't asked him a question. However, when he did went backwards very quickly. Any Coolree backers were well rewarded with a tad of drift that we could have taken.

York 14.55
Open looking class 2 six furlong and going with a couple of selections with the five places on offer and favourite Binhareer needing a tad of luck wanting to come out of the pack.
First up is Mick & Dave's SONDAD.
He could still have more to offer as a 5-year-old having progressed rapidly throughout last season improving over 20lb in doing so.
Finished last season well when 2nd in the Ayr Silver Cup with today’s favourite Binhareer two lengths back in receipt of 4lb. Today our selectin is 10lb better off on that H2H. His last run for 2025 saw him 3rd to Aramram, who has started this season well.
He's the one I fancy from those drawn on the stands side with mid-high draws having it here on 4 of the last 4 runnings. Pace wins the race the old adage and he drawn on that side with the likes of Desert Falcon and American State who may well be at the head of affairs.
Lightly raced, maybe more to offer and Paul Mulrennan does the steering on this one priced around 12/1 and SIX paying places with the likes of bet365.
2nd up is DARK THIRTY who looks an interesting contender returning to York for John & Sean Quinn,. His profile suggesting he could be capable of outrunning his odds in this competitive sprint handicap.
While his reappearance at Doncaster didn’t yield much, he has often shaped as a horse who improves for a run and this sharper effort could easily have been more about building fitness for targets like this later in the spring.
There’s also plenty of encouragement from the form he showed last season when trained by Richard Hannon. He proved himself highly competitive in strong sprint handicaps, including some excellent efforts from marks around this 87 level.
His previous York form with the long straight and strongly run nature of these races appearing to suit him very well and drawn on the far side.
Jason Hart takes the ride and priced around 11/1 and SIX paying places with the likes of bet365.
