Today's Horse Racing Tips

Thirsk 15.50

GRASMERE BOY – 6/1 EW 3 places, 1/5 odds

There are a few obvious dangers here and Dark Cloud Rising probably deserves his place towards the head of the market, has been operating around today’s race strength and arrives in good nick and drawn favourably on the high side.

The Good Biscuit has been in cracking form too, winning three times this season, albeit in weaker races and his middle draw coupled with his usual midfield racing style isn’t the most attractive combo.

The big overnight move has been Fivethousandtoone, who has shortened dramatically from around 14/1 into 9/2 and his low draw/held-up style still isn’t an ideal tactical fit.

Happy to take a look at Julie Camacho's GRASMERE BOY.

He looked a sprinter with a future through the early part of the season, showing a good level of ability and putting together a very consistent sequence before being a shade disappointing on his last couple of starts. Importantly, though, those latest efforts came in stronger company and he now drops back in grade, which should give him a much better opportunity to show his true level.

He is drawn 9, towards the favoured high side, so if Jason Hart can get him into his rhythm near the front without having to burn too much petrol early, he could be extremely difficult to peg back.

The yard has had a quieter season than we are accustomed to seeing from them, but there have been signs of life recently and the jockey booking catches the eye.

JH is 6-2-4 up top so hopefully suggests a significant booking and priced with 6/1 with the THREE paying places.

KORKER – 11/1 EW4 places, 1/5 odds

There are some obvious dangers towards the front of the market. Rhoscolyn has plenty going for him on today’s Heavy ground, while Ata Rangi has been very well supported and brings an excellent Haydock record. Brian and Brighton Boy also made the upper reaches of our ratings and arrive with more obvious recent form.

At the prices, though, I’m happier taking the each-way chance on Karl Burke’s KORKER.

He is certainly not one for maximum faith and hasn’t managed to get his head in front since 2023, but the handicapper has finally given him a proper chance again and today represents a significant drop in grade from much of the company he has been keeping.

His recent race-strength figures are among the strongest in this field. Through 2026 he has regularly been competing in races 6lb above this one and showed he still retains ability when finishing fourth in considerably stronger company at Newcastle on his penultimate start, before producing a lesser effort at Chester.

The ground should also hold no fears. He has previously won on Heavy and is generally versatile when the mud is flying, so conditions arguably bring his stamina and experience into play rather than counting against him.

He is also a course winner, which is another small positive in a race where proven ability to handle Haydock and testing conditions could become increasingly important.

If they go hard enough in front, and there are several horses capable of making this a proper test, he should get the chance to settle, conserve energy and hopefully come through late as the more aggressively ridden runners begin to tire.

Clifford Lee takes over in the saddle, and that looks a positive booking priced with 12/1 with the FOUR paying places.
