Haydock 15.15
LORD BERTIE ā 7/1 EW4 places, 1/5 odds
There are a few obvious dangers towards the front of the market. WovenĀ has been very well supported since the early prices appeared. He has plenty in his favour on the evidence, particularly his current form and proven ability on testing ground, but at around 7/2 in a competitive 14-runner handicap the value has pretty much disappeared.
Kodi LionĀ is another the market likes and he has a previous Haydock 6f win to his name, but his two turf runs this season have finished out the back, so at similarly short prices Iād rather look elsewhere.
The ground change to HeavyĀ has changed the shape of this race quite considerably and I'm optiung for David O'Meara's LORD BERTIE to go very close.
His last win came in a 6f Class 4 at Doncaster in October 2025 from a mark of 83. He subsequently struggled when asked to race from higher marks, but the handicapper has relented and he lines up today from just 76 ā 7lb below that last winning rating.
He hasnāt fully fired this season, but there were at least signs during the summer that he was beginning to show a little more, and Iām happy enough to forgive the latest Hamilton run. Hamilton doesnāt suit every horse, particularly one who likes to be dropped in and delivered late, and today presents a very different test.
He certainly isnāt straightforward, but he found things falling his way when opening his account for his present yard last autumn and the handicapper has now given him a proper chance again.
The ground is a big part of the attraction having placed on 6 of his 10 starts on similar going. Drawn 13Ā should be dropped in and hopefully be delivered into the race as those who have done too much early begin to tire in the ground.
I had been quite interested in Grant WoodĀ before the going deteriorated, particularly given his recent tendency to race more forward, but he has drifted badly and his Heavy-ground evidence is poor enough for me to leave him alone.
Mark Winn doing the steering and priced with 7/1 and some bits of 15/2 with the FOUR paying places.
