Ayr 15.45

šŸ‡The opening handicap of the week looks an intriguing contest with several arriving in form, but it also presents what we believe is an excellent EW value opportunity.

The market is understandably headed by RunninsonofagunĀ for the Tristan Davidson stable. Jason Hart keeps the ride after the four-year-old finished an excellent third over course and distance last week in a Class 5 handicap, a race that produced one of the strongest recent form lines in today's field.

From that race, and going back H2H, is our selected in this one, R Michael Smith's MAYOR OF MAGHERA.

He finished around ten lengths behind, so on bare form there is every reason why the favourite heads the market. However, there are reasons to believe that form may not tell the whole story.

Today's race is effectively around 8 lb weaker on ratingsĀ than the Class 5 contest, immediately bringing several of these closer together. In addition, Tom Kiely-Marshall's valuable 5 lb claimĀ significantly narrows the gap at the weights, and our selection returns to conditions under which he had looked an improving horse only a fortnight earlier.

A lightly-raced four-year-old, heĀ has compiled a solid 8-2-4 career record, suggesting there is still scope for further progress. He opened his account for the yard when first-time cheekpiecesĀ sparked marked improvement in a Musselburgh 1m1f handicap, where he travelled strongly and put the race to bed in convincing fashion.

That race has already begun to work out well, with two subsequent winners, giving confidence that the performance was genuine rather than a one-off.

This race should favour horses able to secure a prominent position rather than those dropped in towards the rear. Mayor Of Maghera's natural racing style fits that expected scenario well, giving him the opportunity to obtain first run on several of his principal rivals if the race develops as anticipated.

Nevertheless, the drop into a slightly weaker race, the valuable 5 lb claim, a race shape expected to suit, and double-figure odds all combine to make him a far more attractive betting proposition than the short-priced favourite.

T K-MĀ is the pilot and priced around 14/1 available and THREE paying places on offer.
