CRAFTY SPIRIT - 8/1 EW, 3 places
At the head of the market, Harry Mole is an obvious danger after a string of consistent efforts at this trip, although his lack of winning conversion makes him opposable at a short price. Supremissy is an improving three-year-old with a recent 5f win to her name, while Never Dark is becoming dangerously well treated and has enough early speed to get involved despite the wide draw. Without Flaw also warrants plenty of respect after winning last time.
However, opting for CRAFTY SPIRIT who gets my vote in a competitive but fairly ordinary Class 6 sprint, with a horse bringing some of the strongest current five-furlong form into the race.
John Wainwrightās five-year-old has really found his feet at the minimum trip this summer, putting together an excellent sequence of 2nd, 1st, 1st and 3rdĀ from his last four 5f starts. He won successive Class 6 handicaps at Wetherby and Beverley before stepping up into Class 5 company at Beverley last month, where he went off favourite and finished a very creditable third of nine.
That latest effort is particularly important. The Beverley race was 7lb higher rated than this and was still right in the mix. He now drops back into Class 6 while remaining on the same handicap mark, suggesting this represents a noticeably easier assignment rather than him needing another leap forward.
His recent wins have pushed him 6lb above his previous winning mark, but that rise has already been validated by the Beverley third. This is therefore not a horse being asked to prove himself from an inflated rating ā he has already shown he remains competitive from it.
The five furlongs is clearly no concern. Indeed, his recent 2-1-1-3Ā sequence suggests it is currently very much his optimum trip, and he has also held his own against some of todayās rivals in stronger company.
Slight reservation about coming from way back so hopefully rides just off the pace today before the stiff uphill finish starts to bite.
John Wainwright is a trainer we know well and with Barry McHugh doing the steering, there is nothing experimental about the combination.
Priced with 8/1 and the THREE paying places (1/5 odds)
