Musselburgh 18.15
Nothing bringing much form into this one and the form of Sea Suite's defeat of our selection Ash Wednesday the other week makes him the 3's favourite.
Of the exposed types, Kelpie Gray has a couple of C&D's here in early 2024 and likely to be popular for Paul Mulrennan.
However, at slightly higher prices, Charlie Johnston's BENACRE looks an each way player back on the turf.
A 7f specialist who is at his most effective when able to travel strongly off a solid pace. While much of his recent form has come on the all-weather, he has proven turf ability, particularly under similar conditions to this.
His close second here this time last year behind Jonny Concete last season highlights that he handles the track well, and a return to this setup looks ideal.
Arrives here fully race-fit following a consistent winter campaign. His latest run is easily forgiven after finishing well beaten off the far side at Gosforth. However prior at Wolves, finished 2l 6th of 12, in a blanket finish won by improving Grabajabba. That form has already been franked, with the winner running well at Doncaster on the opening day of the turf season, suggesting the race was stronger than it first appeared.
He looks fairly treated off a mark of 78, now 1lb below his last winning rating. That success came in a Class 4 (0–85) at Newcastle over 7f, where he beat The Dragon King, now rated 84, in a piece of form that reads well in this context. He also ran to a similar level on turf when second at quirky Chester off 79 in September, proving he can be competitive on grass despite a lack of recent wins in that sphere.
Oliver Stammers has been doing the steering of late but today gets Jason Hart back up top, 5-2-2, and priced with 17/2 and the THREE paying places with bet365 this morning.
