Today's Horse Racing Tips

Newbury 15.30

A competitive Class 3 handicap where the market is largely centred around Ata Rangi, Forty Years On, Nostrum and I Still Have Faith.

At just better than wipes yer face, Ata Rangi represents the in-form Ed Walker yard and the most attractive of those heading up the market.

However, looking at a price going to take George Boughey's SPANGLED MAC.

Will run a rule through his latest effort at Chester where a wide draw left him with plenty to do around a track that rarely forgives such disadvantages. Prior to that, he had shown enough to suggest his ability remains intact and today's return to Newbury could prove significant. He is a previous C&D winner here ran well on the other occasion.

Finds himself well handicapped. from 5lb below last winning rating and, notably, all seven of his career victories have come from marks of 96 or lower.

Wintered well in Bahrain posting a couple of solid placed efforts in stronger company than many of today's rivals have faced. Indeed he is one of only a handful in this field who has consistently competed at Class 2 level and higher.

The likely pace setup could also work in his favour. There appears to be plenty of early speed on offer and that should help create the strongly-run race he requires.

Drawn low, Billy Loughnane should be able to secure a good position, avoid the traffic problems that often arise from wider berths and look to deliver his challenge late. With no concerns regarding the ground and proven Newbury form already in the book, conditions look set fair for a big run priced with 16/1 and the FIVE paying places.

Another of those 3 paying place seven runner affairs and siding with our past winner GLORY FIGHTER.

Regular followers will know that he's been a good servant and, despite advancing years, there are reasons to believe he can still be competitive from the current mark under conditions that look much more suitable than those encountered on recent starts.

The veteran got off the mark for the season in determined fashion when scoring over five furlongs at Nottingham in April, showing that the enthusiasm for the game remains firmly intact. Admittedly, he has not quite managed to reproduce that level of form in subsequent outings, but there are grounds for expecting a better performance here.

Last autumn he won a handicap in cosy fashion from a race rated around 5lb higher than the one he competes from today, suggesting he remains very well treated if able to recapture anything close to that form.

In races of this nature, proven winning ability often counts for plenty and this one knows how to get his head in front when conditions suit. Catterick's sharp sprint track suits and he looks capable of bouncing back to form.
