🏇 Friday serves up an excellent afternoon and evening of Flat racing with action from York, Sandown, Chester and Goodwood offering four very different tests for horses and punters alike.

From our perspective, there's a couple of handicaps at York and Chester that catch the eye. As always, we'll be looking beyond the obvious favourites and concentrating on proven winners, course specialists and horses whose recent form may be better than the bare figures suggest.🍀

Today's Horse Racing Tips

York 13.50

A wide open Class 4 apprentices and will put up two at nice each way prices with the five paying places on offer.

First up is one we backed LTO in COUNT PALATINE.

He appeals as a solid each-way proposition after catching the eye when we sided with him at Carlisle last time. On that occasion he produced his best effort of the current campaign, finishing a staying-on third under Rhys Elliott, who knows the horse well having now built up a successful partnership with him.

The return to 7f looks a positive move. A winner at Ayr over this trip on his penultimate start last season He beat one of today's market leaders, Quest For Fun in that one and renews on identical terms.

He showed plenty of speed at Carlisle over the stiff mile and now reverts to optimum. He remains a couple of pounds below last year's peak rating, albeit needs to achieve a PB being 3lb above last win.

Michael Dods has long been renowned for targeting York with the right type of horse and it would come as no surprise to see this seasoned handicapper run another big race on the Knavesmire.

He is versatile regarding underfoot conditions. He looks a tad overpriced given the strength of his recent Carlisle performance and looks set fair for a big run priced with 28/1 and the FIVE paying places.

Second up is Declan Carroll's ESHERANN.

Goes on 4th run for the yard after coming in from Dermot Weld. The ex-Irish sort had decent form and as a three-year-old he progressed steadily through maiden company, finishing second over 7f at Leopardstown before opening his account at Naas.

He then followed up in a competitive Curragh handicap off a mark of 85, travelling strongly and winning with something in hand. Following that victory, connections were sufficiently encouraged to pitch him into stronger company where he remained competitive from marks in the mid-80s.

Since arriving here he has been tried over a mile and extended mile trips in stronger Class 2 and Class 3 handicaps, including the Thirsk Hunt Cup when just 3l behind our winner Mirsky.

However, he hasn't really looked to see those races out strongly. Today's return to 7f catches the eye because his best early Irish effort came over this sort of trip and pedigree suggests speed rather than a stayer.

Off a mark of 87, only 2lb above his last winning Irish rating, and unlike plenty of these exposed handicappers, he's still relatively lightly raced.

Zak Wheatley is the pilot and a positive given the rider knows him well from all three starts so far for the yard so hopefully can outrun odds of the current 20/1 and the FIVE paying places.

Chester 17.28

Always like to have a dabble at these 7f events on the Roodee.

Tony Carroll's pair Dapper Gee Gee and Oman heading the market but neither appeal with rookies on their backs. The Roodee is one of the most tactical tracks in the country where track position and racecraft often decisive.

This makes the booking of proven course specialist Jason Hart a major positive on one of our previous winners RED MIRAGE.

He's a previous C&D winner when with Andrew Balding in 2022 and, now 8-1-3 here, clearly handles the unique demands of this track.

The eight-year-old shaped with plenty of encouragement when returning from a four-month break to finish a solid third at Doncaster in March. While he hasn't quite built on that effort since, his last two starts came under less-than-ideal circumstances, firstly on Newcastle's stiff all-weather track and then on quicker ground at Leicester.

Conditions look much more suitable today with easier going and a turning track that plays to his strengths. Drawn trap 5 should allow a decent early position just off the pace. Now racing 2lb below his last winning mark with conditions likely to suit better than they have in recent starts looks well capable of bouncing back to form.
